Create the Web

London 2012

With the demise of Flash as the preferred method of creating rich interactive websites, animations or web application, you would be forgiven for thinking Adobe might of lost their edge.

However, when I attended the 'Create the Web' conference in London, I discovered that far from falling behind, Adobe have been steaming ahead building a suite of FREE web development tools for us to use.

Here's a peek at the ones I found most interesting.

CSS Filter Lab

Adobe are pushing through new web standards, such as CSS filters. This is exactly what they were doing in flash with pixel bender but now it's in pure CSS3 inside your browser.

Check out the animated custom filters! Currently supported by Safari-nightly and Chrome.

Adobe Edge Code

This is Adobes version of the Brackets project. It's an open source html/css/js editor built using html/css/js. Its open source and rebuilt every 2 or 3 weeks, so if you really want a feature which is doesn't have then request it or even better, just write your own and it'll appear in the app in a couple of weeks.

The features I really like are the minimalist UI, the inline editing - no need to open multiple files anymore, and the ability to link to and update the browser without ever needing to refresh the screen.

Edge Inpect

Remote inspecting of sites / apps across platforms. They say all you need to do it put the client devises on the same network to have access to them.

Edge Inpect

Animate

An animation tool which works much like the Flash Profressional timeline animation, but animates CSS properties with JavaScript. There should be no cross-browser issues as the only properties availble are the ones which are consistent across all the platforms. Fall back options are given for older browsers.

Edge Animate

Reflow

This is one for the creatives. It is a design tool which answers the problem of designing responsive websites.

Create JS

CreateJS is a suite of modular libraries and tools which work together to enable rich interactive content on open web technologies via HTML5. These libraries are designed to work completely independently, or mixed and matched to suit your needs. The CreateJS Suite is comprised of: EaselJS, TweenJS, SoundJS, PreloadJS, and Zoë.

There is a plugin for Flash Professional which allows you to output your animation in a format which Createjs can easily consume.
